Furnishing Peaceful Homes - Shalom Bayit Program
Furnishing Peaceful Homes - Shalom Bayit, is a furniture bank that provides gently used or new donated furniture and household items to survivors of domestic violence and their children residing in King County. We help survivors and their children rebuild peaceful homes and lives. Shalom Bayit is Hebrew for Peaceful Home. While based on Jewish values, particularly the value of tikkun olam-repairing the world-Furnishing Peaceful Homes - Shalom Bayit is a program for any person leaving a domestic violence situation in King County. Ninety-seven percent of our clients are not Jewish, and come from a wide variety of ethnic, racial, religious and economic backgrounds.
Impact
Established in 2001 as a Jewish Community response to domestic violence, Shalom Bayit has helped to create new homes for over 900 women and their children with more than 12,000 donated items from over 2,000 donors throughout King County.
Client Access
Shalom Bayit works collaboratively with over 20 domestic violence and social service agencies, police departments, shelters, and transitional housing programs in King County. Women, often accompanied by their children, come to the Shalom Bayit warehouse to "shop" for the items they need to furnish their homes and their lives. Typically a woman needs everything any new household would need.
