FURNISHING HOMES FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVORS
Recipient of the 2006 Take Action Against Domestic Violence Award
Helping women and their children rebuild peaceful homes and lives

RETURN TO PROGRAMS

Mission
Shalom Bayit:  Furnishing Peaceful Homes, provides gently used or new donated furniture and household items to survivors of domestic violence and their children residing in King County.

Shalom Bayit - THE PROGRAM
Shalom Bayit is Hebrew for Peaceful Home.  While based on Jewish values, particularly the value of tikkun olam—repairing the world—Shalom Bayit is a program for any woman leaving a domestic violence situation in King County.  Ninety-five percent of Shalom Bayit’s clients are not Jewish, and come from a wide variety of ethnic, racial, religious and economic backgrounds.

Impact
Established in 2001 as a Jewish Community response to domestic violence, Shalom Bayit has helped to create new homes for over 450 women and children with more than 6,000 donated items from over 750 donors throughout King County.

Client Access
Shalom Bayit works collaboratively with over 20 domestic violence and social service agencies, police departments, shelters, and transitional housing programs in King County.  Women, often accompanied by their children, come to the Shalom Bayit warehouse to “shop” for the items they need to furnish their homes and their lives.  Typically a woman needs everything any new household would need.

 Donations
Donations of gently-used, or new furniture and household items are the heart of the Shalom Bayit project.  It is only through community involvement—in the form of donations, financial, and volunteer support—that NCJW is able to provide this much needed furniture bank.
Our warehouse is located at a confidential location in Redmond, WA.  We appreciate donations that are dropped off by appointment only (address and directions given upon scheduling).  Donations can also be picked up once a month, see the information below to schedule an appointment, and we ask for a suggested donation of $25.00 for this service.

 How To Donate
Donating furniture and household items is quick and easy.  Just call the Shalom Bayit Program Coordinator at 425-558-1894 ext. 2 to schedule a time to drop off, or inquiry about having your donated items picked up.  We pick up furniture items only (not small household items that can be delivered, unless they are accompanying furniture items), on the Eastside on the 3rd Sunday of the month, and request a small suggested donation of $25.00 for this service.  If you are from Seattle, and not a member of NCJW, you can contact Sharehouse, a furniture bank for formerly homeless people, at 206-767-5280, who will pickup furniture in Seattle.
